Review of Ex Machina (2015) by Gary B — 06 Dec 2017
'If you've created a conscious machine, it's not the history of man. That's the history of gods.'.
Anthropomorphising the cyborg is at the heart of this critically acclaimed film, focusing on perfecting artificial intelligence and the strive for believable sentient beings. Going beyond the typical Turing test, the concentration is placed on whether Ava's interactions are simulated or real. Artificial intelligence is presented as an advancement of where human evolution is inevitably headed. With three central characters, viewing the story from the perspectives of either Caleb, Nathan or Ava creates a different experience. Not a complicated storyline, but a fascinating insight into artificial intelligence and how it can disturb humanity's power.
