Review of Ex Machina (2015) by Delphinus C — 12 Apr 2016
Beautiful cinematography (the very picturesque setting certainly helps) and a strong philosophical edge make this an instant-classic science fiction film.
Gleeson seems to fit the slightly awkward, but also quite serious-type of character well. Maybe that's just how I'm used to him.
Really all of the performances are quite strong. Only Vikander's performance felt a little... heavy handed? But, hey, she was a robot after all.
Gleeson's character ends up being too easily manipulated through his emotions. Perhaps this is part of the message though, that humans - even the more pragmatic, sciencey-types - are slaves to some extent to their emotions, whereas the androids... well, who knows?
Still I felt a little unsympathetic towards him in the end, not a great thing, generally, for a protagonist.
Anyway, as a sci-fi that explores the boundary between humans and A.I. this was a good watch.
Too much swearing gives it a further half star minus, and it should be noted that there is unabashed nudity and adult themes.
