Review of Evita (2009) by Marc D — 31 Dec 2007
Underrated film version of Lloyd Webber/Rice musical. Madonna's performance isn't quite perfect (she's much stronger as the regal first lady than the ambitious, struggling actress), but she and Banderas carry the film admirably.
Madonna's antagonism with Banderas's Che is wry and sometimes sexy in their numbers together, while she and Pryce make for a weirdly compelling power couple. The cinematography is elegant throughout.
Best numbers: "High Flying Adored" and "Waltz for Eva and Che.".
