Review of Evita (2009) by Andy C — 07 Aug 2012
My favorite Lloyd-Webber musical, especially the stage version. Okay, so Madonna pales in comparison to her stage counterparts, but she does a pretty good job considering her vocal limitations. Madonna's real problem is her lack of facial expression, which makes it seem like you're watching a manequin play Eva for half the film.
Antonio Banderas is the true standout of the movie. Jonathan Pryce sings well enough but is miscast as Juan Peron. It is well filmed and orchestrated (although too varied in musical style, unlike the stage version which has a more unified feel), but some lyrics were rewritten from the original show and dampen the overall of the piece.
It is very literal-minded, perhaps too much so, though the crowd scenes are impressive.
