Review of Evita (1996) by Shaun K L — 06 Apr 2012
Evita the stage musical is unbearable and dated. Thankfully all the music arragements have been modernized for the movie version. Can Madonna act? Not really but you'll be surprised to learn she can sing.
Her voice sounds spectacular for the first time and she parades well enough since she`s in familiar territory: this is, after all, a long music video, and not a movie per sé, so she flirts and looks the part without any problem.
Antonio Banderas unfortunately is not up to the game, and tends to fall into caricature and his singing is quite annoying. The movie however has that much needed sense of irony and sacarsm that the original stage version had.
This is a mock on Evita, and how masses were manipulated by an actress that didn't do anything for them beyond giving them a magical moment or two. Yes the similarities betwen its star and the role she plays are outstanding.
Quite frankly, Evita -the movie, not the play- is not half as bad as you might've heard.
