Review of Evil Under the Sun (1982) by Sherry L — 24 Jun 2007
Agatha Christie´s peculiar little belgian detective is never better then, when he is portraied by Peter Ustinov.
In Evil Under The Sun, Mr. Poirot is hired by a millionaire named Sir. Horace Blatt who was once engaged to a woman named Arlena and gave her an expensive diamond ring from Tiffany´s. When she broke up she also brought the ring back, and now when Sir. Blatt was about to insure the ring it turned out that the ring was a fake.
So now Mr. Poirot has travelled to an idyllic island were Arlena is spending her honeymoon with her husband and his teenage daughter. Despite the fact that Arlena is newly married, that doesn´t stop her from flirting openly with Patrick Redfern in front of the eyes of Patrick´s wife!
It soon turnes out that every single one on the island has their own personal reasons to hate the beautiful socialite Arlena and suddenly one day, she is found strangled on the beach and everybody seems to have alibies for the time she was killed. This gives Mr. Poirot a hard nut to crack.
Filmed in an amazingly beautiful environment, and with lots of stars except from the wonderful Peter Ustinov as Mr. Poirot and Diana Rigg as Arlena, but also; Jane Birkin, James Mason, Roddy MacDowall (who you will recognise as the little boy in Lassie Come Home) and Maggie Smith.
This is certainly not the best novel by Agatha Christie (I have read almost all of them) but one of the best filmed (apart from And Then There Were None of course). So if you are a Agatha Christie-fan I strongly recommend this one. Peter Ustinov is an amazing character actor, he has made it before and he makes it even better this time!
