Review of Evil Things (2009) by Shawn S — 12 Nov 2013
Dominic Perez's horror film is yet another about found footage that the US Government has found room for in its already ridiculously large archive collection. Five college students head out to the country for the weekend and disappear without trace.
Everything is filmed, including a monotonous car journey, but in the film's favour we are given a briefly tense build up in the style of Spielberg's Duel as a black van pursues the five friends.
Safely at their weekend retreat all seems well until the black van appears outside the house! The idea of an unseen assailant stalking the friends, though not original, wasn't a bad one but the execution in the second half of the film is all about a few screams, a little running around and the odd door slamming.
That's it! If you're expecting to witness brutal murders or anything remotely grotesque then the closest you'll get are the burgers at a diner. In the end this is a slow, uneventful 90 minutes with the only plus point of the black van soon losing its impact and, once again, if you are being threatened as these people clearly are why would you insist on filming the whole thing when running away and saving your life is more preferable?
