Review of Evil Dead (2013) by Zachary I — 28 Oct 2013
As some of you may know, I am not a big fan of film remakes. They try to improve over the original and introduce people to the original and fail miserably. However, there will be the one exception time to time and this movie is one of those exceptions.
Before I say anything about this movie, I just want to say that I am a huge Evil Dead fan. I love all three movies and Ash Williams is one of my favorite movie characters of all time. Also, Sam Raimi is one of my favorite directors of all time and I consider the Evil Dead trilogy to be his best movies.
When I heard that there was going to be a remake, I was mad. However, the remake turned out not only to be the best horror movie of this year, but the best horror remake ever made. Evil Dead stars a relatively unknown cast like the original film and the movie is directed by a first timer named Fede Alvarez.
The basic plot of the movie is that these five teens go out into a cabin in the woods and find a book and one reads the book making zombie like creatures attack them. They then have to survive for as long as they can.
The movie is sort of a fourth Evil Dead film instead of a remake because there are many things from the original trilogy and it takes place in the same cabin where Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 took place so technically this is a reboot instead of a remake.
This movie is a half-sequel, half-remake, and half-reboot. However, it is a remake and it's a remake that works extremely well. I absolutely loved this movie and it's my second favorite movie of the year.
All of the actors do very good jobs in this movie and there is no character named Ash which I liked because a lot of people would be arguing and Bruce Campbell made this decision. However, all five characters have the traits of Ash Williams which I loved and one character has a shirt similar to Ash William's which was a nice homage.
Speaking of homages, this movie has so many references to the original films like when you first see the main character she's sitting on the hood of Ash's car. Also, you see the deer head from Evil Dead 2 and you see Ash's sawed off shotgun and a chainsaw so similar to Ash's.
It had so many references that I was about to cry. One thing I really loved about this movie was the direction. Sam Raimi handpicked Fede Alvarez and he picked the right guy because you can tell that he had a lot of love for this movie and put all of his effort into this movie.
The special effects are incredible and the best part is that they are all practical which means the crew put a lot of effort into this movie. Fede Alvarez even said that there was no CGI which is great because practical effects can create genuine scares and tension unlike CGI which creates no scares whatsoever.
The movie is also very scary although it didn't scare me once. The movie is insanely brutal and gory. There are some very brutal death scenes in this movie and one of the main characters survives being stabbed in the eye, being stabbed in the shoulder, and being shot with a nail gun.
This movie is not for the squeamish and it might be hard to watch for some people. This movie is insanely gory and it's a blast to watch. This is probably the goriest movie I've ever seen and it's just awesome.
The goriest scenes had to be when a girl cut her own arm off with a turkey cutter and when the main protagonist rams a chainsaw into the mouth of a deadite. I had a blast watching this movie and I think that the blood and gore in this movie was just great.
I also loved the death scenes in this movie and they are brutal. The movie also has some very good dark comedy in it as well although there's not a lot of it. There was also a very awesome cameo at the end that I won't spoil for you.
Overall, Evil Dead is a incredible horror remake with no flaws with it whatsoever. I like this more than the Conjuring and Sinister although this is the worst Evil Dead movie, but it's a perfect remake.
If you love Evil Dead and horror, you will cherish this movie and love it. I have already heard that there's a Army of Darkness 2 in the works and I will definitely be seeing it. I highly recommend this movie and Platinum Dunes needs to take some very good notes and by the way, Michael Bay is evil.
Enough said. Also, my mom watched this movie with me and did not like this movie. Although she doesn't like horror movies that much, I still love her more than anything and it's just her opinion.
She doesn't like movies that I like with two examples being The Cabin in the Woods and this movie. I hate movies that she likes with two examples being Iron Man 2 and Cowboys and Aliens. Although we have different opinions, we still love movies and we always will.
