Review of Evil Dead (2013) by James W — 20 Mar 2014
The Evil Dead is complete and utter horror movie perfection, it is like the holy grail of horror as it showers the audience in blood and drenches them in fear. The build up is the only slight niggle in what otherwise is a swiftly moving film, as there is some dull filler and wobbly dialogue, but after that you know deep down what is coming so dread and shivers set in almost immediately.
The cast performances are marvellous, and they are brilliant prey and bags of blood for the evil that is unleashed, that is when the characters get seriously interesting. Jane Levy completely steals the show as Mia, who is a druggy and is struggling with addiction so when her brother and friends visit her things look up as they intend to help her, but Lou Taylor Pucci's character intrigue with the twisted book gets a little too familiar.
Jane Levy's deliverance of lines is excellent, specially when she is sat in the bunk bed whispering about what she encountered in the forest, jaws will drop in sheer terror as she slowly utters her words, "there was something in the woods".
From then on Evil Dead takes gore to whole new levels, setting the benchmark for bloody horror. The best scene to show off what the practical FX team have done is when Dead Mia licks a stanley knife, splitting her tongue in half, and when Jessica Lucas' possessed teen cuts her face off with shards glass! I would name every moment of gut wrenching blood splattered madness but there are too many to name, and some just leave you bewildered, this film is amazing from top to bottom: The story is twisted and terrifying just like the dreaded book itself, the camerawork is beautiful and the acting is some of the best I've seen in a horror movie.
Final Score: 92%.
