Impressive use of prosthetics, makeup, and cinematography to provide a haunting atmosphere; Over the top gore and savage violence provides cringeworthy moments throughout the film; Memorable acting from Jane Levy and Lou Pucci despite being surrounded by actors that are unmemorable; Weak characterization, development, and interaction between each other; Forced, weak dialogue that stupidly foreshadows the demise of all characters early in the movie; An astounding lack of intelligence from our characters; The film's final act clashes with the supernatural, horror elements established previously, feeling like an over-exaggerated one-on-one showdown.

All in all, "Evil Dead" takes a clichéd horror storyline and fails to do anything new to justify the 1981 Sam Raimi original, deservedly belonging into the already overflowing bin of poor modern horror movie adaptations of classical properties.

Unless you are a member of the "Fangoria" audience, I would skip "Evil Dead" and continue to recommend 2012's "The Cabin in the Woods". 2.2/5.
