Review of Evil Dead (2013) by Adam H — 13 Jun 2015
I'm devastated by how disappointing this was. There were some great ideas in place and the plot wasn't even half-bad, but Evil Dead was gory to the point of desensitisation, and the glorified gore that I'd usually welcome became ineffective and induced yawns rather than any sense of terror.
I attribute this failure to the lack of lighter or even humourous moments - these are essential in almost any horror film so as to create a meaningful contrast between a sense safety or normality and a sense of terror or other-worldly horror.
I did feel that it redeemed itself in the final act, but all in all, I can't forgive its ignorance.
