Review of Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex *But Were Afraid to Ask (1972) by Roxanne L — 16 Dec 2007
Last two sketches at the end were the best; and the best being last. I am sure that audiences in 1972 might have found seeing a man in women's clothing funny - seeing this today is disturbingly ordinary, old and barely worthy of more than a smile. It's more like "fast food" humor that requires little effort and has no particular comedic nutritional value. The "Gene Wilder" scene, was just silly, and again, verging on ordinary, which is even more disturbing!
Furthermore, while audiences thirty-five years ago might have found some of the material so shocking as to require laughter to relieve tension, made today, however, some of the references might have landed Allen "banned-in-Canada" as a misogynist. Have years of others copying his formula rendered this dull? In 2007, unfortunately, the notion of woman being gang-raped by boy scouts just isn't funny as it is no longer outside the realm of possibility - only a sheltered society can really laugh at such an improbability - this seems more like a sad headline from a national newspaper than a perverted joke.
