Review of Everything Is Illuminated (2005) by Christian A — 30 Aug 2009
How do you translate Foer's book into a film? By cutting out all the intricate asides and simplifying the main story, that's how. I try to temper expectations for adaptations from Book to Film, but I can't help feeling disappointed by the loss of magic and tenderness that burst from those pages.
I thought some fundamental changes took place that altered the meaning and I also disliked the choices made with the main character. The film feels a little anxious to be loved, and it comes off less genuine.
