Review of Everything Is Illuminated (2005) by Adam S — 05 Jul 2012
Too often, movies that are based on books get the short end of the stick from critics by the critics' tendencies to make a judgmental comparison to the preceding book, rather than viewing the movie as its own work.
This is the case for Everything Is Illuminated. I have not read Jonathan Safran Foer's novel, but I have seen the movie quite a few times, and each time, the same emotions are evoked. I find a lot of heart in this movie, at times from its implications rather than its acting.
The tale is that of a young man set out to find the woman who saved his grandfather from the Nazis. His tour guides (and their dog) are a man, roughly the same age as the protagonist, and his stubborn grandfather.
They persist through realistic, amusing situations to reach their destination, and once they do, the tone changes, and gives the movie a real heart. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the canine companion's name: Sammy Davis Junior Junior.
