Nobody explores the nuances of youth and their unseeming depth like Richard Linklater, and Everybody Wants Some!! represents yet another penetrating chapter in the filmmaker's examination of his living-in-the-moment philosophy.
The blasé approach to multiple storylines might almost overshadow the bits of wisdom that recall the absurdity of life and, in this case, the college life; but it's precisely this discreet intelligence-and lack of preaching-that makes the film so immensely appealing.
Supported by a lively, talented and ultimately hilarious group of up-and-coming actors, Linklater throws away-as he always has-standard ideas of plot and character to instead compose a beautifully harmonious tune that balances on the edge of faded ideals.
The deceptive simplicity of Everybody Wants Some!! might not resonate as strongly as it should on a first viewing, but like most of Linklater's filmography, it will stand the test of time.
