Review of Everybody Wants Some!! (2016) by Junelkean — 01 Jul 2017
Richard Linklater has been one of the most notable filmmakers working today proving that his 2003 movie, ‘School of Rock’ has stood the test of time. And this 2016, he continues the series of flashbacks with Blake Jenner and Zoey Deutch in "Everybody Wants Some!!".
As what fans might expect, Linklater has conveyed the coming-of-age elements once again with relatable qualities and well-balanced personalities of each character. But he does not only capture the hearts of college boys, additionally, he also catches the vibe of the 80s - the fashion, trends, life style and as what is most highlighted, the music.
The actors are revelations: Glen Powell, Wyatt Russell, Juston Street, Ryan Guzman and Will Brittain to name a few, are charismatic and exceptional. But the lead protagonist (Jenner), is not as magnetic as other of his co-actors in terms of his acting skill.
Like what ‘Dazed and Confused’ did, there is a poor foundation in building the structure of the plot, which Linklater always tend to do. It's very loose causing some of the audience members getting bored. There are also a lot of comedic scenes which did not work.
VERDICT: Everybody Wants Some!! features your typical squad goals with a blast of nostalgia, which works finely.
