Review of Every Which Way but Loose (1978) by Dave R — 02 Mar 2010
Ma Boggs: [Ma has just learned of Philo and Orville's trip plans... turning to Philo] What're you gonna do with the baboon?
Philo Beddoe: Orangutan, Ma. Clyde's an orangutan.
Ma Boggs: [scoffs] Well, what's the difference?
Philo Beddoe: 12 ribs. Just like you and me.
A strange buddy comedy that involves Clint Eastwood partnered up with an orangutan. This image of course got me and a friend instantly interested in watching this film. Its a nice change in pace from other Eastwood films, and is certainly fun in its own way. Still strange though.
Philo Beddoe, played by Eastwood, is an easy-going trucker and a great fist-fighter. With two friends - Orville, who promotes prize-fights for him, and Clyde, the orangutan he won on a bet - he roams the San Fernando Valley in search of cold beer, country music and the occasional punch-up. But he is floored himself by a dainty little country and western singer, who gives him the slip when she realizes he's getting too serious. Phil, Clyde and Orville set off in pursuit, pestered by bikers.
There are a lot of random elements all thrown together in this film, but for some reason it manages to come together and be entertaining.
Philo Beddoe: I'm not afraid of any man, but when it comes to sharing my feelings with a woman, my stomach turns to royal gelatin.
