Review of Everest (2015) by Tristan M — 03 Mar 2016
Everest falls under the large category of being released after a critically acclaimed book, in this cast Into Thin Air. The book was great, has everything we could have asked for, and didn't leave anything untouched.
We never expect that from movies that follow, however this one seems to fall particularly deep into that problem. There's so much more that could and kinda needed to be covered to get the whole story, yet we miss so much, and there's plenty of more available time to get it covered, another half an hour onto a 2 hour long movie is a nice thing, particularly when it's dealing with true events such as this one.
We only get to know a couple members of the teams notably Scott Fischer, (who is actually from a different team but played an important role) Beck, and Rob Hall. Everyone else is just kinda there, the Japanese lady who climbs the seven summits is a side character, the journalist John who wrote Into Thin Air and produced a large portion of the information to make this movie, is seen a number of times, and rarely mentioned.
We don't get a sense of then crawling around in the dark and cold, or the disgust that is camp 2 or 3, the icefall, the tent getting brown off Beck that nearly causes him to freeze to death for a second time after walking out of the darkness.
So ya, the acting and script are good, we have a good cast that we don't get to see much of, the effects and CGI are both very well done and look great, as well as the sound. However it suffers heavily from needing more depth, something a extra half hour could have helped hugely, and to focus better on all of the characters who we all involved.
