Review of Event Horizon (1997) by Ed Fucking H — 15 Feb 2011
Easily Paul Anderson's best film, and that isn't saying very much as I pretty much despise all of the rest of his work (with the exception of the first Resident Evil which I only mildly liked.) Sam Neil always does this kind of role really well (brought to mind John Carpenters In the Mouth of Madness at times.
) The deal is a crew is sent on a rescue mission to bring home and survivors from a ship that Dr. Weir (Sam Neil) invented and designed that could go through a black hole. The crew is run by Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne) a no nonsense kind of motherfucker.
Weird things start to happen pretty much immediately, and it becomes clear that when the ship went through the black hole it went through Hell (or something similar to Hell.) Weir starts to lose his mind and refuses to give up the ship and jeopardizes the entire crews safety.
A very entertaining Sci-Fi/Horror with thrills and chills to spare. This doesn't re-invent any wheels and the results feel like a smarter Leprochan in Outerspace, but a dumber Solaris. Not bad by any means.
This is a fun 90 minutes that flys by and really grabs the viewer and doesn't let go until the end credits. Aside from Fishburne and Neill most of the performances are subpar but appropriate for this kind of film.
Definently worth a watch if you haven't seen it already, or maybe even a re-watch if you havent seen it recently.
