Review of Event Horizon (1997) by Derek J — 30 Oct 2017
Event Horizon is a good example of a creepy concept that had much potential but was poorly executed. That being said, The movie is till a really fun ride through the contemporary history of horror cinema.
There are nods to the Shining,Hellraiser, and The Haunting to name but a few. The problem with the film, is its production was rushed in order for the studio to focus on the massive summer blockbuster that was James Cameron's Titanic which made the production of EH a mess from the get go.
So Paul Anderson can be a forgiven a bit for butting heads with the studio. Despite the problems, its amazing that the finished product turned out pretty good. With a shortened running time and a convoluted plot, the film still holds up in the scare dept.
which accounts for its cult fanbase. Overall the actors play their parts well even if the performances seem a bit rushed at times and one wonders what could have been with a longer film and bigger budget along with a more stable production period.
This film is a often overlooked thrill ride filled with some truly scary scenes and some great concepts that still hold up today. Check it out on Halloween and stay scared.
