Review of Event Horizon (1997) by Kirsten N — 14 Sep 2012
WARNING, CONTAINS SPOILERS : Paul Anderson's films may not be for everyone, but in my opinion this is the best film he's made. It's also one of the few movies he's made that's not based on any source material.
A cross between The Shining and Alien, this film actually is quite scary and disturbing. There's a lot of good scares and cringe worthy moments. It's also one of the goriest films I've ever seen. The most disturbing scene is when the crew discovered what happened to the original Event Horizon crew. Another disturbing scene is D.J.'s, Jason Isaac's character's fate.
Laurence Fishburne is great as the captain and Sam Neil is wonderfully creepy as Dr Weir.
The special effects and score are good. I also love how big the sets are. Trick photography and a giant mirror was used to make the big, long corridor even longer.
I'm only giving this a four star cos the dialogue's naff and the fight between between Miller and Weir at the end is choppily edited.
A flop on release, but it's found it's audience on video and DVD.
