Review of Event Horizon (1997) by Devon M — 11 Apr 2010
A movie that's never completely sure about what it wants to be. Itâ??s all about this rescue crew with a scientist (Sam Neill) who are investigating a derelict spaceship near Neptune. They board the ship and discover what really happened on it.
It's directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (NEVER to be confused with P.T. Anderson), the man who has given us Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil. It's better than those movies, mostly because the story of space isolation is very interesting and holds your attention.
The problem is that it's a mishmash of movies. It works best when it is being a psychological horror; when the crew starts to straddle the line of sane and crazy is when it really picks up for me.
But in addition to the horror, you also get campy moments, out of place macho-guy lines, and even more out of place goofball comedic relief. All the characters are stock, and the film itself does hit a number of cliches, but that is always the biggest pitfall of the horror genre.
I was never bored with Event Horizon, but it never rises above okay.
