Review of Evening (2007) by Morné O — 28 Jan 2008
The cast listing of this movie seems like a whoâ??s who of the greatest actresses in Hollywood, what with names like Vanessa Redgrave, Meryl Streep and Glenn Close.
Not only this, but the support from the younger female stars, some brilliant actresses in their own right such as Toni Collette and the beautiful Claire Danes, add to this quality.
The performances of especially Claire Danes and one of the leading men, Hugh Dancy, really stood out for me and their portrayal of their characters are truly convincing as the younger Anne and Buddy respectively.
The story is quite gripping as it travels regularly between the present (Ann lying on her death bed) and the past (Ann remembering her fateful encounter with the Winterborne family and Harris) and in doing so, does not get â??stuckâ?? in one time frame for too long. I recalled reading that a lot of viewers found the film confusing due to this moving back and forward in time, but I must honestly say that this was not the case at all.
In all, it is a brilliant film and well worth seeing â?? it urges itâ??s viewers to live life to the full, and not to agonize over a decision which could one day, in the evening of our lives, be seen as a â??mistakeâ?? that should well not have been made.
