Review of Even the Rain (2011) by Jesse O — 08 Sep 2012
It's hard not to think of Ken Loach, considering that director Iciair Bollain had a role as an actress in Land and Freedom and that the screenplay's signed by Paul Laverty, Loach's trusted writer since 1996.
Indeed, having a protagonist who, put in an alien and troubled social context, takes conscience of both the drama occurring around him and himself, is a dynamic that doesn't come new to Laverty (examples being Carla's Song or Bread and Roses).
The difference here should be given by the film-within-the-film structure, able to establish a parallel between past and present oppression. Too bad that, contrary to what happens in Land and Freedom (significantly NOT written by Laverty), here the focus is too much on Costa's charachter rather than on the people's rebellion, which would have been a much more interesting matter.
In other words, the Bolivian troubles seem to serve Costa's change rather than being the issue itself. This said, the movie's well shot and acted, yet it looks like a lost opportunity.
