Review of Even Dwarfs Started Small (1971) by Roger H — 17 Aug 2007
This film has wonderful visual composition. That's about the only good thing it's got, which unfortunately ain't enough. Casting only dwarves, like a lot of Herzog's stunts, plays just as it is.
..a stunt. They run around laughing a lot...gets really old fast. As far as the "political" aspects of the film...the film makes its point in one of the first shots of the chicken eating the chicken, and the rest is overstating its case, tediously at best and ridiculously at worst.
This film was intended to be a mess, I guess, and I suppose it succeeds but it's nothing I personally care about. Godard already made this movie with Weekend, and sorry Herzog, but that's the standard.
