Review of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time (2021) by Jeffmd — 30 Sep 2021
This is too much to unpack. Evangelion 3+1 is kind of like xenosaga 3 back on the PS2. The story was already written and now they were on the last movie with so much to jam into it. The problem is xenosaga 3 had over 20 hours of cinematics to tell it and this movie only has under 3.
Honestly the new movies have introduced us to new terms and sciences that are a part of its universe with no time to explain them. I also think they couldn't have gone with a more boring ending route.
Lastly, buckle that seatbelt. Because Shinji will go from winey angst teen he has been for 3 movies now to a full fledge adult in the time of about 60 minutes. Not bad, but I am disappointed. I was hoping for finalizing story arcs for all the best girls and instead was thrown a whole bunch of mcguffins and quickly closing doors.
I am usually tolerant of even bad anime, but I think this one gets a 3. Good music, great art, but focus was wrong, too much was added, and I think it is not going to be enough for old fans like myself.
