Review of Europa Report (2013) by Erno K — 22 Oct 2013
I can't stand found-footage films most of the time. They are made because they are cheap, they all look the same and are generally just annoying as hell. I wanted to see this one simply because of its sci-fi approach and because I love movies about space travel and all that exploring the unknown crap.
Was it any good then? Meeeh. There are some cool moments to be sure, but overall I am left with the familiar unsatisfied feeling that is often the end result with these types of movies. I hated the use of dozen small screens as well, as that is just stressful to me, because I didn't know which one I should watch at any given time. Let me just focus on one thing at a time!
The build-up is pretty sweet I think, and the film does manage to invoke the feeling of impending dread quite nicely, but there is not enough pay-off for my money. I wanted to see more of the 'anomalies', not just a tiny glimpse at the very end. Even at a lean 90 minutes this movie feels too long, because you can only show the same shit so many times. Like rummaging through some electronic equipment. There needed to be more revelations.
If you don't have anything better to do, I guess this one will suffice.
