Review of Europa Report (2013) by Adrian Z — 25 Jan 2014
Europa Report goes to great lengths to make itself credible by putting science at the forefront, which is commendable. Shot as a pseudo documentary based on found footage, possibly to disguise it's low budget, it turns out to be a rather intriguing pastiche of other sci-fi movies.
2001, The Abyss, Aliens, and Sunshine were clearly among the main inspirations for this film, but herein lies what holds Europa Report back. it does not break any ground on its own. Even applying a recently used and abused filmic style to a new genre does not make the movie.
Luckily, there is enough science here for science fiction aficionados to appreciate.
