Review of Europa Report (2013) by Mason B — 12 Aug 2014

I feel this is similar to the film that Prometheus could have been had Prometheus possessed a far better screenplay. Prometheus had it's strengths, but it lacked any sense of wonder and none of the so-called scientists acted like scientists with passions and scientific curiosity.

Europa Report makes up for those flaws in spades. Even though Europa Report is not quite as scary as Prometheus, it is a far more satisfying films that exhibit's some of the Science-Fiction genre's greatest strengths, such as it's sense of wonder and curiosity as well as it's sense of horror.

Europe Report is a film about a space flight undertaken by a group of astronauts to Jupiter's moon Europa to find life hidden underneath it's frozen surface. Upon arriving many things begin to go badly wrong and they find things far weirder than they ever could have expected.

A remarkable thing about Europa Report is that the scientist's act and speak like actual intelligent scientists do.They're scared to be going this far out into space, but they're also excited and anxious.

The film believes in the weight and the importance of this expedition and it's transferred to the audience. There is actual science and discovery in this science-fiction film, and it's wonderful.

The film also consists of a very talented international cast playing interesting and human character that you actually find yourself caring about. The only real problem is that it's a bit too slow-burning is some parts, testing the patience of it's viewers.

And also some of it's attempts at drama fall flat. But this barely phases this brilliant film, which manages to find an amazing ending that manages to be both bleak, morose, and hopeful and inspiring at the same time.

Europa Report is a wonderful science-fiction film that any fan of the genre should see.
