Review of Europa Europa (1990) by Philip E — 16 Jul 2009
A young Jewish boy must join the Hitler Youth in order to survive. An interesting enough premise, and an interesting enough character who reminds us that many of the things we hold sacred and identify with are really mere luxuries when the game of survival turns brutish and unforgiving.
Though I'd often enough read about Hitler Youth facilities, I hadn't yet seen one dramatized, and it goes without saying that witnessing the brainwashing of these young boys was quite terrifying.
An odd WWII film, to be sure, but recommended. Also, a young Julie Delpy found within--lo and behold she speaks German too.
