Review of Eulogy (2004) by Matthew B — 10 Jan 2009
Ah, Zooey Deschanel is amazing. But, after my brief period where I smile after seeing her on screen, is there anything left in this movie? Yes and no. I'm all for dysfunctional family flicks, however this one was a bit off.
The annoying-ass children and a few of the parents really set this one off for me. Everbody Loves Raymond really didn't do anything for me as the neglected child, and the angry older sister really pissed me off.
However, Famke Janssen was wonderful as the "sex-toy" girlfriend of the most level-headed sister. I would have liked if those two were in the movie more. Hank Azaria had a few good parts, but I really had to grow to like his character -- although the porn scene was kind of funny.
Overall, this movie works because of Zooey Deschanel's magical charm on me...as well as Famke Janssen's character and her girlfriend. Otherwise, try to miss this one.
