Review of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) by Lucas Y — 22 Jan 2013
One of my top films of the 21st Century. This is Kaufmans most feel good film. Like all his work, the main character is a reluctant protagonist that hates themself in the beginning. Jim Carrey & Kate Winslet are awesome as two former lovers that broke up & can't bare to have any memory of their relationship.
Fucking beautiful. But as Carrey is in the middle of his procedure he realizes even hurtful memories shouldn't be forgotten. The dream sequences are awesome. Gondry shows plenty of inspiration throughout.
The rest of the cast is great, even Kirsten Dunst. Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood are hilarious in all their scenes. Altogether, one of the most bizarre, but overall best love stories I've ever seen.
And when the opening scene with Carrey at the train station replays at the end I get teary eyed every time. "Today I skipped work and took the train to Montauk. I don't know why. I'm not an impulsive person.
" Great use of music too.
