As a kid growing up this was one of the first instances where I was introduced to computer generated animations. I was terrified of this film for the longest time because of how realistic I thought the character of E.T. was.

I recently watched the original film made in 1982 where they originally used animatronics during the entire movie and honestly I'm a little disappointed. Gone is the fear of E.T. and instead I'm watching a film in which I can clearly see that E.T. is fake based on his robotic movements and facial expressions. CGI for me gave the character of E.T. life with realistic and fluid motions. Am I disappointed that Steven Spielberg got rid of the animations in the HD version that I just watched? Absolutely.

The actual review: This film is actually pretty great on a story telling level. There are lots of metaphors and situations where Spielberg takes advantage of the simple story and adds more meaning to it. The acting in this film is fantastic and you have to give praise to the child actors. The music by John Williams is phenomenal, along with all the special effects that were limited back in the day. This film is a classic.
