Review of Escape to Witch Mountain (1975) by Sarah O — 05 Apr 2011
Even though I just watched this as an adult, I can see the charm in the movie. A brother and sister orphan duo must escape the clutches of a tycoon who wishes to exploit their psychic powers. In spite of the orphans being set-up with digs that include a carousel and an ice cream parlor, they decide they do not want to be held prisoners in this luxurious atmosphere. Instead, they go in search of their origins. The girl, Tia, keeps having flashbacks of being shipwrecked during a storm. A crotchedy old gentleman, Jason, picks them up and the chase is on. The tycoon will not give up.
I liked the movie for the wardrobe and the old-school special effects. Even though CGI dwarfs them now, I believed that stuff in the movies all the time when I was a kid. Tony & Tia are supposed to be magical, and I think it's amazing they could pull off what they did in this movie. Good for an escapist blast from the past.
