Review of Escape to Athena (1979) by Michael L — 20 Aug 2010
No wonder we won the war, the Germans - clearly identified in their dark, scull adorned uniforms - were rubbish. A bonkers film in which a Greek prisoner of war camp commanded by Roger Moore (with an incredible German accent) is over-run by Elliot Gould (a college jumper/ Yankee hat wearing yank (!)), Telly Savalas (a Greek nationalist) and Richard Rowntree (token) as Stephanie Powers does a strip show on a stage - all directed by David Niven, bingo.
It gets better, they persuade Moore's men to help them loot a monastery for treasure but hang on that's a V2 and the Nazis are dressed as Formula 1 mechanics. They foil that, bunker down in a brothel and it end in a Greek dance with Savalas as the Alpha male.
Wait, there's more - the curtain notes have us in 1979, listening to Phili soul back with toursists in the same square. A rainy afternoon well wasted. Mentale!
