Review of Escape from Planet Earth (2013) by Travis P — 05 Jun 2013
If you like your animated movies devoid of humor and inspiration, then you came to the right place. So this is about an alien with something to prove that comes to Earth to save his hotshot brother. Does anybody out there remember Planet 51? This could easily be considered a companion piece to that, and if you've seen Planet 51, you'd know that sentiment wouldn't exactly be considered praise.
It's just so by the numbers, it fails to ever be remotely interesting. Escape from Planet Earth doesn't have even a resemblance of a personality; if I were to describe this movie in a word, that word would be safe.
For example, whenever any character is placed in peril, even the bad guys, we get the obligatory shot to assure you that despite any potential danger they're trying to build, even getting a paper cut would be out of question.
Then you also have the fact that this is just mediocrity in the writing department; if you have a lame joke that you're going to work into your script, don't make it a recurring one (nerds use keyboards, that's what you're going to go with?).
I suppose if you have kids that don't know any better, they'll like it because it's bright and colorful... This isn't the absolute bottom of the barrel, but it's low tier enough that there's no reason why you shouldn't just invest your time in something better.
