Review of Escape from Planet Earth (2013) by Germaine G — 06 Jul 2013
You have at your disposal a film making technique that enables you to basically do anything. Yes, you heard me correct, ANYTHING! Want a bouncing potato that turns into a warmongering lizard...badaboom badabing! 3D animation is capable of such unique storytelling. Let your imagination run wild. I should know, I run a 3D company myself.
I guess that's why I am so disappointed with movies like this. So much potential, such little delivered. Escape from Planet Earth is a cheesy take on space based animation. It was like watching a movie in slow motion. The plot moved sooo slowly. Sooo obviously. You could have guessed the beginning middle and end of this film in the first 5 minutes.
Animation was good though, so I thought, they're gonna throw me a curve ball NOW! Ok, NOW! Then end credits, and cue disappointment. You're writing a script for a 3D movie space based movie with aliens and the whole shibang, and this is what you write? Really? You could make the characters morph, fight back in such interesting ways, made the whole thing so much... MORE.
Voice acting was good too. But let's be honest, they were working with uber-generic lines here. The best voice acting can't pull this movie out of the gutter where it belongs. $40M must buy a better script than this! Right?
I don't know what else to say, it's just a poorly made 3D movie not out of inexperience or skills not being present. It was just lazy. The producers clearly followed the zero risk zero reward scheme. And the sad part is it will probably pay off financially. Parents usually just see a poster and buy tickets for their kids. (Confirmed this movie actually made money).
If you're taking kids to see this movie, I guess they'll like it if they are below the age of 8. Above that, and I think your starting to insult their intelligence. And make sure you have something to distract you, because it's unbearably boring for the average adult.
