Review of Escape from New York (1981) by Kyle E — 10 Jul 2009
Welcome to the future aka 1997, where things like cell phones still don't exist...gas is a commodity, and totally badass characters with mullets roam around? Completely opposite then what was really going on in 1997? Yep, but does that make this a bad movie, not at all.
Kurt Russel is Snake Pliskin, badass extraordinaire. This is the character that spawned numerous amounts of badass video game characters in the 1980's/90's, including none other then the famous Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series.
The plot is about as paper thin as any and every action film. Snake's called upon to rescue the president from the Manhattan island prison. Crime has become so bad that the whole island has been turned into a prison, and Snake has the opportunity to avoid his "lengthy" stay by completing this mission.
It's not terrible, but it's not great either. My biggest problem with it is that Snake doesn't have a single memorable line in the film, as his character is just resorted to the typical grunts and harsh voice acting as most action heroes.
Worth a watch though, at least on the most boring of days.
