Review of Escape from New York (1981) by Mike J — 22 Jul 2009
What a great Carpenter movie. It's got action, humour, low budget cheese that doesn't undermine the overall story, and that story is actually kinda fun. New York City is an unpoliced prison and Snake has to break in to save POTUS who has crash landed right in the heart of the city.
The movie is gritty, cynical and bleak but never in a heavy handed manner. Also, the best part of the movie is seeing Kurt Russell playing his first ever badass in Snake Plissken. It changed his career and launched a collaboration that spanned 3 memorable films (yes, I am counting Escape From LA).
