Review of Escape from New York (1981) by Kenneth H — 13 Aug 2009
Not as exciting as I hoped it would be. The characters and plot are pretty ho-hum standard issue. The premise of a dilapidated and uncivilized Manhattan populated entirely by criminals was potentially interesting in that there would be gangs and monsters roving around (like headcrab zombies in Ravenholm in Half-Life 2, or darkseekers in NYC in I Am Legend).
Unfortunately, while we see a few freaks here and there the criminals themselves are a lot more pedestrian than I imagined they'd be. All in all it's a decent but not impressive action film.
