Review of Escape from New York (1981) by Bryan W — 19 Oct 2009
Though the elements of action may have been dulled slightly by time, this movie bears no attempt at a smooth gloss. In fact, it looks a lot like a b-movie ought to, though it has a much more inventive script and far superior acting; Russell's live-wire performance takes moments that would have otherwise called for the post-apocalyptic scenery do the acting and elevates the script by popping like a pure product of that very scenery.
The film seems to be missing some of the oppressive tension seen in better dystopic future visions, but in a place where action and chaos is the status quo, any such criticism hardly seems valid. Genre filmmaking nearing its B-grade best.
