Review of Escape from New York (1981) by Lacy M — 21 Jan 2013
This is not one of John Carpenter's best films, but it is one of the most fun and entertaining. Kurt Russell does his version of Clint Eastwood's growling, reluctant hero as he fights off a cartoonish mob of post-apocalyptic barbarians led by Isaac Hayes.
Art direction on this gritty, dirty island of convicts is great as well, from the trash strewn streets lit only by bonfires to Hayes's chandelier-topped pimpmobile. Carpenter's synthesizer is ever present to set the mood of a hopeless future.
It's a fun ride that I've taken many times, and will again.
