Review of Escape from New York (1981) by Trevor R — 30 Mar 2013
This grimy dystopian thriller is loads of fun. The small budget can never fully live up to the insanely great premise, but charming ambition and a wild bunch of characters make it work (Harry Dean Stanton! Isaac Hayes! Ernest Borgnine! Lee Van Cleef!) Of particular note is Kurt Russell's grizzled and growling Snake Plissken: a lone-wolf antihero so gloriously unflappable, it borders on comical.
But that's why we love him. John Carpenter really understands the art of camp.
