Review of Escape from New York (1981) by Tim S — 07 May 2015
Escape From New York is one of those movies that if you're a guy, you've probably seen it. And not only have you seen it, but you've probably seen it multiple times. I'm one of those guys.
This is just an enjoyable movie, but I think it's more of a guy's kind of movie. I'm not a macho kind of guy at all either, I just love this movie and I recognize it for what it is. I've slowly become a John Carpenter fan over the years.
His work usually bothers me because of how egotistical he can be sometimes, but I've realized slowly that he's made some of the best low-budget movies throughout the 1970's and 1980's.
Not only did he direct them, but he wrote most of them, produced some of them, and did the score for virtually all of them. For this one, he helped to make Kurt Russell an action star (also in Big Trouble in Little China).
It's a fun movie that only gets better with age, despite being dated in many ways.
