Review of Escape from Alcatraz (1979) by Nathan N — 09 Jan 2010
Andy Dufrense Clint Eastwood is not. The Sisters wouldn't have stood a chance. Eight years after Eastwood and Siegel created the ultimate cop, they collaberated again to create a fine, fine criminal.
Escape from Alcatraz is everything a prison movie ought to be. Grim, clausterphobic and populated by charismatic characters. But it has an additional plus that is, of course, its greatest strength: Eastwood.
He brings the trademark slickness that he always does for Siegel. A quiet and calculating bad attitude that harkens back to his star-making role in the Leone pictures. Plus, the poster looks like he punched a hole through granite.
