Review of Escaflowne: The Movie (2000) by Amos A — 25 Aug 2007
Story... ehhh... Visuals... Gorgeous. This is on here because the soundtrack (though it smacks of Mononoke in places...)is beautiful and never fails to make me all misty eyed. What should have been a glorious addition to the tv series turned out to be a beautiful but somewhat disappointing re-imagining.
Dilandau is stripped of many of the things that made his character so likable (warning-- extreme bias-- I am a Dilandau fangirl) and poor Folken is reduced to a strange David Bowie ala Labyrinth look.
There is no possibility that the tv series could have been successfully shrunk to movie size and still retained its epic nature, but this tries really hard. I really do like this movie, but there are bits and pieces that are an embarrassment to the Escaflowne name, one such piece being the psychic battle between Van and Dilandau.
This is up here because I cannot put the series on my favorite movies. ^_^.
