Review of Escaflowne: The Movie (2000) by Amoritia H — 14 Jun 2007
I think to appreciate this movie you really have to forget all about the tv series. Even then, I found it to be quite lacking in plot and character development. It was unfortunate that all of the side characters were pretty much cannon fodder.
And there wasn't nearly enough back story - why the hell was Folken so bent on destroying Gaia? I feel like the "my younger brother was ordained to be king and not me" explanation skims over something important.
And why was Hitomi depressed? Explanation please? On a good note, it's a treat for the eyes and ears, and having the main character displaying the signs and symptoms of depression was interesting as you don't see that very much in anime.
