Review of Ernest Goes to Camp (1987) by Alan L — 22 May 2009
An essential film of my youth, climaxing with a particular "The kids win against men with guns with non-lethal toys" battle three years before Home Alone. Jim Varney was a talent who was hard to quantify, the important qualities of Ernest seem to be a slight childlike nature of an outcast trying to succeed.
Though pedantic, this was the sort of 80s movie where "formula" was considered the natural state of a feature film, we know all of the plot points and foreshadowings before we see the film, but the joy is to see these forthright character actors doing their loopiest.
The moral? Try not to get shot at three times? What this camp movie lacks in handjobs it makes up with its optimism for the little guys.
