Review of Eraserhead (1977) by Peter D — 30 Jul 2011
What a weird and yet strangely fascinating film. What is the purpose of the film? To show a man's descent into insanity? To us a man who is terrified of the prospect of father hood? To show us how soulless the city can be? The real question is.
.. WHO CARES? Well either way I am going to try and analyze this anyway... Okay so the dinner part scene... Well I except every man is afraid of meeting the parents of his significant other and those scene seems to show all the awkwardness of it, the overly nosy mother, the crazy father and the dinner gone horribly wrong, basically a horrible first meeting.
The fork touches the chicken and it starts oozing a dark liquid, symbolic of the penetration of a women losing her virginity perhaps. The dinosaur thing/baby might as well be the dark though that every parent has in the back of his or her mind, the baby might turn out of be someone deformed creature! Or it more likely is just symbolic of an unplanned, unwanted child who is at the center of an unhappy marriage.
Oh the parents may feed, cuddle and sing to the child in between their fights ,but the baby might as well be a monster because it is not truly loved by its parents(though this is certainly not true of all unplanned babies).
The scene where the brain of the protagonist has his brain turned into erasers, is probably symbolic of the soulless modern world where people aren't individuals ,but mere objects, mere cogs in the corporate world.
And finally the women next door, is a representation of the desire of man and the lure of adultery. Though my explanation of this film might be me just talking out of my ass... >_> All in all though the film does suffer from a some dull moments it is at least worth watching for the visuals, if not the story.
