Review of Eraserhead (1977) by Frederick B — 07 May 2012
I live pretty close to the Lowell, MA area, and the dark, industrial atmosphere in this film really struck a chord with me. While I'm not too familiar with David Lynch's work, this film really makes me inquire about some of his other films made during this period.
In a way this film works as a an early precursor to themes that Tim Burton would commercialize in the late eighties. I have only seen this film once (I borrowed it from my regional library consortium,) but I know for a fact that repeated viewings are in order.
Unlike many "drug" films that are lauded by sixty-eight year old acid heads, I find this film to be much more cohesive and visually arresting when placed next to something like 'Head'.
If you can find anything to understand about the complex world of the mentally ill, then you are apt to find much enlightenment and a richness of stark visual articulation. For the dark, imploring schizophrenic in the moviegoer.
